PowerBike

Submitted by: SustainableFlatbush

Sustainable Flatbush

Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York

If we had $20,000 Sustainable Flatbush, a start-up, grassroots community organization, would build a mobile solar-electric PowerBike for our Brooklyn neighborhood.

Mobile, clean power

With a 200-watt solar panel, batteries for reserve power on cloudy days, and a modular design that fits neatly into a cargo bike, the PowerBike provides on-demand, mobile power for limitless applications:

- Anybody can charge their laptops, phones or mp3 players at Sustainable Flatbush events

- The system cranks out enough power to run a small sound system and lights for outdoor programming

- Local businesses "host" the PowerBike, attracting customers and highlighting their sustainable business practices

- Our community garden has clean electricity where there is no access to the electrical grid

- Of course, the PowerBike provides backup power in emergency situations

An inspiring learning tool

An education station makes the PowerBike ideal for teaching school kids about energy and the environment. Through appealing readouts and data-collection software, students monitor system performance like power output and avoided greenhouse gas emissions.

Why:

The residents of Flatbush, Brooklyn are showing what we can do on the neighborhood level to reduce our carbon footprint, fight global warming, and foster community at the same time.

This project is a long-term investment in local renewable energy for our community. Day after day, year after year, the neighborhood PowerBike keeps harnessing clean power, keeps teaching the skills that are the foundation of our new green economy, and keeps modeling a way of life that does not jeopardize future generations.

Wonderful folksy and neighborhood oriented! The mobility will give it an ongoing visibility and freshness in the community. I love the fun interactive way it educates. A perfect blend of high-tech and low-tech that makes it both approachable and intriguing for all ages.

Great way to bring hands-on solar energy experiences to the general public!

This will bring solar energy education New York City public schools, which are not eligible for New York State's solar incentives. Just wanted to make that point!

A great opportunity to educate Brooklyn's children on green energy, while having a little fun.

I love the concept of using solar power to run a sound system at an event. This will make outdoor events much easier to run and spur lots of great discussion. It would be fantastic to bring this to schools to raise awareness about the possibilities of solar energy and renewables in general. I sincerely hope to see this project come to life!

I think this a fantastic idea that will bring much to the community as well as our schools! I would love to see this grow, good luck!!

You can turn a crank to point the panel toward the sun!

This will be a great educational tool not only for schools but for everyone in the neighborhood who wants to learn about renewable energy.

Hope more schools will follow

I loooooooooove this project!!! reminds me of the hot dog and icy street vendor carts!! And it's interactive!! Kids can play with it and learn! It should have a little jingle playing as well, just like the ice cream trucks! So the kids get excited when they hear it and people know it's coming by!

This is a brilliant idea. Taking solar-electric mobile in a recognizable, approachable way will go a long way toward encouraging further education and inspiration for adopting green practices in the community. I love the fact that it can be "hosted" by local businesses further reinforces that we are all in this together and our solutions will come from working together. Thanks for coming up with this!!

This would be a wonderful step toward a more sustainable Brooklyn and we enthusiastically endorse it. We happily see so many trees in our community but are always concerned about the continuing effects of so, so much traffic. Moreover, the children in this area need something like this -- different and exciting and touchable -- to learn about the green economy that will be the salvation of us all.

Moreover, this innovative way of increasing connectivity is another move in the right direction.

This is a win, win, win situation. Please support it.

Thanks.

This is a great idea! I would love to see the parks department embrace this concept and have energy for people with computers and radios...etc enjoying the city's greenery.

I like it, but I'm curious how it'll be engineered, as a practical bike.
You'll need a means to raise and lower the solar panel, like a sail, so that you can see where you're going when you're riding it, and not get blown over in the wind.

Thanks for asking, Adam.

Actually, the bike transports the system, but you park it to harvest the sun's energy (although in the future we'd love to add a generator so you can charge the batteries by pedaling the wheels). The bike remains stationary while the system is in use. The final design may end up putting the system on a bike trailer rather than a cargo bike for getting around while it's all assembled.

Great question!

This is imaginative and fun! Great way to expand your presence throughout the neighborhood.. And spread solar power info!

The bike would be such a welcome addition to the curriculum in the neighboring schools. What a wonderful way to provide students with hands-on learning experiences that would be easy to facilitate!
