Trash In the 360

Submitted by: artdog213

Arizona

The first step to encouraging environmental stewardship is straightforward: green is clean. The trash must be removed before habitats can be restored, wild creatures protected, or children introduced to the wonders of nature. In Arizona, illegal dumping is extensive and so prevalent that some sites can be located using Google Maps. To address the issue, I propose to connect and mobilize the community through art. A fine-art quality photo essay of illegal dumping will be created as part of a mobile exhibit that will be used to increase public awareness and volunteerism in the state. The exhibit will incorporate art created from trash collected from dumpsites and include a children’s recyclable art workshop/contest designed to reinforce community recycling. Project methods developed for the workshop and exhibit will be provided to community groups for their use. Dumpsite photographs will also be used to prioritize sites for cleanup by local organizations, circulated to community groups for placement on literature for public distribution, and incorporated into a publicly available website developed for reporting dumpsites located in the state. The project money will be spent as follows: 50% for exhibit and workshop development, 20% for website development, and 30% for exhibit travel expenses. The exhibit will be ready for display within 3 months of funding and the website within 4 months of funding. Unless further funding is located, the exhibit will be displayed until travel expenses are exhausted and donated at closing. I hope to make this project’s green effect clean, creative and fun!

This concept should strike home with everyone. Trash is 360-it surrounds us every day-from watching someone throw something from their car window to illegal dumping in places difficult to reach. The effort must be as basic as just picking up what you see wherever you go. Teaching kids to respect the environment and to create something new-even from trash-signifies a new beginning.

I also love this concept very much. It has so many levels of interest for educational yet exciting purposes.

Not is the example art worthy of display, its use means one less piece of material in our beautiful deserts.

Thank you for thinking of this. We're going to do a front page link from our site so everyone can see this. Good luck!

Great idea! Art exhibits made from trash would create quite an impression on children. Teaching children to respect the environment will reap benefits the rest of their lives.

If we don't recycle now --- our grandchildren will pay a heavy price.

Everyone needs an education and strong reminder what trash does to our environment.
