Detroit Goat Farm

Submitted by: earthydetroiter

Detroit

If I won the grant, I would use it as start-up capital for a nonprofit, organic, dairy goat farm in the city of Detroit. With 40 square miles of vacant land, an unemployment rate over 13 percent, and a huge shortage of access to fresh food, Detroit is an up-and-coming location for urban farming and ranching. A goat farm would create more employment opportunities from less land than crops.

The funds would pay for:
1. Approximately 20 goats, enough for a small herd (40%)
2. A simple pole barn to house goats, as well as fencing for the facility (30%)
3. Milking and processing equipment (30%)

Community members would be involved in the care of the goats in exchange for access to pasteurized goat milk, which would be available on-site and at a local farmers’ market. The farm would be self-sustaining after the initial investment. Profits would be used to purchase cheese-processing equipment and build a community center with classrooms and a food science laboratory. Goat products, potentially value-added commodities, would cater to the local/organic food niche market and reduce consumers’ carbon footprint by creating an alternative to imported food. All facilities would be available as learning sites for Detroit Public Schools and other nonprofit organizations.

Additional grants from research programs at Michigan State University, other institutions of higher education, and the state and federal government would make possible alternative energy research projects such as an anaerobic digester, which produces energy and compost.

Brilliant, and it´s clear that you´ve already started researching the possibilities for community involvement.

We ran out of space to mention that Catherine Ferguson Academy for Young Women has already begun a similar project on a smaller scale in the city - we'd like to work with them as much as possible.

what a wonderful benefit this could be to DPS :D; would love to help as much as possible with the community center.

This is a great idea. There is a lot of momentum in Detroit for urban farming right now. A goat farm sounds like a good choice as well, in order to add to the diversity of the types of farming in Detroit. And I hope that they can work with Detroit Public Schools, the more opportunities for that school system the better!

Very interesting idea, especially to have within the city itself! You might want to look into non-pasteurized milk, which has been shown to provide nutrients unavailable in the pasteurized variety, yet if handled properly is still completely safe. (For an example of one farm that is has "raw" milk, see http://moojesus.com/?to=keepingitclean)

Thanks, AnnaRamona - while I've tried raw milk and found it to be delicious, there are definitely more health concerns. Selling raw milk is actually prohibited in Michigan, unless it's done through goat shares, something we're willing to consider if demand for it presents itself.

This is a cute idea. There is an article in the Detroit Free Press about another individual that wants to buy up a lot of land in Detroit and just convert it to farms.

This is an amazing idea! I think its great that you can incorporate a way to bring an agricultural and educational experience back to such a place where hearts and minds are weighed down by bleakness. Its a small step but a resolute one at that! Good luck to you :)

Good point, mrdarcy - I've been watching the news about Hantz Farms, although I haven't heard anything new recently. Check out <http://www.hantzfarmsdetroit.com/press.html> for more information about this.

An anaerobic digester could be a great advantage not only to your project but to other local projects as well. It would produce energy and be able to sell carbon credits. It would be a eco-friendly way to degrade organic wastes. And it would produce valuable products like fertilizers or animal bedding. Great idea!

Thanks, buskrebe! Michigan State's department of biosystems and agricultural engineering has some exciting research going on in this area, and we've begun a discussion with them about using it for the goats.

This is actually really kind of brilliant. With the Detroit Public School system struggling like it is, Any opportunity to have cost-effective educational trips for students is highly beneficial. Field trips that are within the area and would cost essentially the bus-fare are ideal for to aid an otherwise dying district back on it's feet. Let alone for the city's rebirth. This seems very well thought out.

This get my vote. Great ideas for turning the waste land of Detriot into a local food solution. Great job guys!

Thanks, PreMed - we hope to eventually make enough to subsidize even the buses, possibly placing the goat farm on fieldtripfactory.com as well as creating a partnership with the school district. Also, the community center could have a laboratory with equipment that many DPS high schoolers normally wouldn't be able to access. The possibilities are just about endless!
