"Small Steps on Bike Pedals" — Go Green and Lean ¡Viva Verde! Bike Sharing Initiative

Submitted by: AnnaRamona

Palo Alto College's Go Green ¡Viva Verde! Committee

Palo Alto College, San Antonio, Texas

Greeneffect finalist
With this Green Effect grant, Palo Alto College will be able to extend its focus of community empowerment by creating a “Small Steps on Bike Pedals” Go Green and Lean ¡Viva Verde! Bike Sharing Initiative that will be an inspiration for all of San Antonio, one of the fattest cities in the United States. The initiative will foster environmentally responsible citizens who choose to bike rather than drive; will reduce our consumption of non-renewable energy; will improve our air quality; will protect our campus’ indigenous plants and wildlife; and will encourage more people to visit our beautiful college.

The “Small Steps on Bike Pedals” Bike Sharing Initiative will be self-sustaining via leadership opportunities throughout its development, implementation, and continuation by students, faculty, staff, and neighbors who will share the knowledge they’ve gained with others.

The Green Effect grant will underwrite the immediate purchase of:
• 100 Used/Donated Bikes that will be spray-painted day-glow green – available free to ride around our 132-acre campus ($4,000)
• 6 Student-Designed Sculptural Bike Racks – materials/fabrication ($6,000)
• Bike Shed – including extra bicycle parts, tires, tubes, and tools ($8,000)
• 5 Free Bicycle Maintenance Workshops ($2,000)

In addition, classroom integration of skills will be promoted (e.g. designing a website/logo, planning/executing wellness activities).

So, when it comes to making our world a little greener, the “Small Steps on Bike Pedals” of this Green and Lean initiative will definitely add up to meaningful progress and positive change for our campus, our neighborhood, and our city.

This is a wonderful way to get college students involved in caring for the environment, saving on gas and other car maintenance items, and getting fit in the process!

I love the idea of the bike trails and bikes. I think this would be a great way to save our mother EARTH. I am an active member in the viva veda club.

This is a great idea. Especially good to have added bike maintenance classes so students there aren't just riding bikes but developing skills.

You are "moving" in the right direction not just environmentally but in many ways, it seems. Here's a great article on why.

Making Things Work

By FRANCIS FUKUYAMA

“Shop Class as Soulcraft” is a beautiful little book about human excellence and the way it is undervalued in contemporary America.

" ... Crawford argues that the ideologists of the knowledge economy have posited a false dichotomy between knowing and doing. The fact of the matter is that most forms of real knowledge, including self-knowledge, come from the effort to struggle with and master the brute reality of material objects ... "

" ... While I make my living as a “symbolic knowledge worker,” I have both ridden motorcycles and made furniture .... Few things I’ve created have given me nearly as much pleasure as those tangible objects that were hard to fabricate and useful to other people. ... "

So, that's for a great idea that offers more than a piece of equipment that is important in all the directions we need to be going - environment, health, self-sufficiency, community-building, growing skills - and out and out pleasure in them all.

Great idea. The bikes will energize the campus and will make students want to get more active and save gas, fuel emissions and will want to protect the air quality around the campus. I love it.

Green AND lean, just what San Antonio (and the U.S.) needs! This is a revolutionary idea. (Pun intended.) Wheel (I couldn't resist) definitely change the campus and the community. Go AnnaRamona, go!

I've often wanted that bike to zip down to the natatorium for a swim...or the library for a read! And on hot days you create your own breeze!

looove this idea...youll be helping not only the environment but also the riders health at the same time. this can turn people on to exercise and who knows maybe even ditch the vehicle for local strolls around the neighborhood as you run your errands.

I think they do this at UC Davis -- great idea, college students have enough expenses without using cars to get from one class to another

This is a superb opportunity to truly use resources in an efficient, logical, and even pleasurable way. What other sorts of locomotion bring as much in both fitness and joy, much less rewards in conservation, than bicycling! This could insure both a lasting message for National Geographic and attract considerable, positive attention to them in a vibrant, youthful setting. They stand to gain an excellent reputation as they work in common cause with a community college toward practical conservation.

While most all these competing programs have a sincere and valuable effect on the easing of consumption and one time use of remaining resources, the oil/gas/auto problem is one of the most optional and easily corrected of the vast ecological disasters we are producing. Solutions set at bike racks!!
I have ridden a bike to work, and usually even to do small shopping runs, more than half of my life.
I spend the gas savings partly on better food to aid the process, and, I actually feel far less energetic and 'lung clear' when driving instead.
Ride a bike and smile in the mirror.
Avg.=12-25miles a day for 25 years, and your lungs and heart respond to the exercise.
Good work, and best wishes.
