All we are saying . . . is give plants a chance! Here at Hingham High School (HHS), we would like to use the grant to not only build a greenhouse, but also start a completely new program designed to permanently and positively change our community and help our environment. We would use our greenhouse to provide the HHS community with programs to:
1. Teach the students the skills and knowledge necessary to create “green” gardens, grow organic fruits and vegetables, prepare meals using their produce, and appreciate the value of eating locally grown produce as a means of reducing their carbon footprints and improving the quality of their food.
2. Reuse the pounds of waste generated daily in our cafeteria for compost (student-run program)
3. Grow and study endangered local plant species
This generous grant would impact the entire student body of more than 1,000 students, the students’ families, HHS faculty, and members of the larger Hingham community. Every year’s senior class of approximately 250 students would graduate with not only a greater appreciation for a green lifestyle, but also the skills necessary to translate their green aspirations into attainable goals.
All we are saying . . . is give plants a chance, and give HHS a chance to empower our students to make going green a reality. Hingham High School students will take the small steps that will lead to big steps, meaningful progress, and sustained positive change in our community and environment!
