Seed to Seed, Edible Garden Project

Submitted by: lynnann50

LynnAnn's Path to Nature-Gardening with Conscience, Debbie Ketchum-Jircik,Trees for Tomorrow

Trees for Tomorrow, Eagle River, WI

We are "fire souls" teaching people to understand the importance of being able to grow healthy, fresh food.

Our project is Seed to Seed, Edible Garden Project, born from the UW-Extension program Visions Leadership.

The impoverished of the area must have healthy produce available. Teaching them to grow it themselves has become our passion.

As avid container gardeners we did a container planting workshop at the Food Pantry's May dinner for the recipients. Each family went home with a container of three veggies to grow in that container, a tomato, a pepper and a pole bean.

We raise funds for our project by planting container gardens at the area Farmer's Market and offering them for a donation. In our short growing season, it's important to understand how easy it is to have fresh produce by growing in containers.

Our Seed to Seed Edible Garden Project also serves as an edible classroom, helping people better understand where their food really comes from. Our practices are organic. We teach thoughtful use of the earth and resources.

The funds would enable us to properly fence against deer and other creatures who also love the produce, publish brochures promoting healthy eating and gardening and growing practices.

We have dreams of hoop house growing tunnels to produce veggies all through the winter as Will Allen does at his Growing Power location in Milwaukee.

We are completely committed to creating community available growing areas. This award would take us to the next phase of our dream

We know Lynn Thomas, we have seen her “Path to Nature", she has inspired many people on the need to “eat local”, and is a true blue plant and tree lover.
She has made a concerted effort to spread the word about the use of pot gardens. Her examples, at her garden shop, are classic examples of that which one can do with little garden space.
She has had a struggle to get her business growing; she is well deserving of a grant to fulfill her need to spread the word of the “green effect”. Her love of her work shines on her face when you meet her. She is determined to succeed!

LynnAnn's heart and soul is totally pure and organic - as is her gardening philosophy. Wanting and willing to give back to nature and the community is a huge part of her life. So many volunteer projects, classes, demonstrations and the development of community gardening ideas have LynnAnn's name attached to it. She is amazing!

A grant reward would enable her to touch so many more lives in such a positive way! She is very deserving. There are many of us who want to continue learning from her about Mother Nature and healthy living!

Wonderful!
We all have to eat! And good organic goodies grown personally within a hands reach - does it get any better? I just finished eating my supper which consisted mainly of produce from our little garden just outside our home. Spreading the word in this manner is so important. Reading about this has been a real Full Moon treat today! 5 Stars!

It is time to teach all people how to acquire food to eat without going to a grocery store. Having to depend upon the soil directly for sustenance will teach respect for the earth. Seed to Seed is truly and simply what is needed now to help people help themselves. Bravo! You 'grow girl'. Five stars.

What an awsome project for our community!!! Thanks to Lynnann and Debbie for their commitment to this. It provides fresh food for those who can't afford it and educates reciepents and helpers on how the grow their own. With our economy as it is we all can look to the earth to provide. Jo Langley

Please support this group's efforts in creating a 'Green' Northwoods. Hard to believe that folks many years ago were able to grow food to keep their families fed throughout the long winters. Growing in containers is very user friendly to our large elderly population- specifically those who, due to degenerative changes and low income, are unable to maintain large gardens. Also important is that the food would be fresh, full of nutrients typically lost in the inexpensive convenience foods purchased by those living on fixed incomes. How wonderful that the generations would be helping one another- making connections beyond the container given. Particularly unique is learning the ways to protect our plants from deer & other creatures.
We have a strong volunteer spirit in the Northwoods of Wisconsin- this project would of interest to many in the community and would be supported.

hi all, on the topic of deer...we are using an herbal oil spray to deter the deer in the area...At Trees for Tomorrow they have little or now fear of humans. Deer are a common complaint up here with most gardeners.

We have the garden enclosed in a web like tape and spray it regularly with the spray. It's also deters small varmints as well because we've strung the webbing at three levels on the posts.

I've used this spray for 7 years with complete success...and know many who would vouch for it's usefulness. (Search: I Must Garden to read about it....)

So far so good....
